Does it eradicate the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19?


Over the years, UV light has been successfully used to destroy various SARS viruses. Until recently, there was no research on whether UVC light is capable of destroying SARS-CoV-2, a virus which causes COVID-19 disease. Today, scientific studies show that high doses of UV-C light destroys the harmful SARS-CoV-2 virus and prevent the spread of coronavirus.


The research concluded that "UV-C is a powerful tool that can be applied extensively in a wide range of public institutions including hospitals, nursing homes, workplaces, schools, airports and shopping centers to disinfect contaminated equipment and surfaces to prevent and reduce SARS-CoV-2 contact transmission."

Effectiveness

Bacteo is headed up by 3 inventor entrepreneurs on a mission to find tech solutions to the COVID-19 crisis.

 

We realised that there is a technology that can help - ultraviolet light (UVC). UVC can kill or render inactive harmful pathogens including coronaviruses.  It's been used in the healthcare sector for this purpose for over 100 years.


But we saw that there were no suitable UVC lamps on the market for disinfecting workplaces, rental apartments, beauty salons or homes. Existing lamps use plastic or aluminium enclosures that absorb UVC light and limit its effectiveness. What's more, disinfecting with these lamps takes a lot of time and effort, and creates an unpleasant ozone smell.


So we set about designing a lamp that is powerful, effective, and effortless to use. We established a new company, Bacteo, and brought together a team of experienced engineers and developers to find a better way to harness the pathogen-killing potential of UVC.

Designing a safe, easy-to-use UVC lamp for fighting coronavirus meant we had to solve a range of technical issues:
How could we make it safe to use? UV rays can be harmful if you are regularly exposed to them, so we wanted to ensure users are rarely or never exposed.
And how could we ensure it was robust enough for regular long-term use, and had the power to disinfect large areas like rental spaces and beauty salons?
To resolve these questions we developed a range of different prototypes, trying out various materials and safety features. After extensive research and experimentation, we settled on the core elements of the Bacteo Tower Lamp:

- A stainless steel frame,
- A doppler effect motion sensor to ensure the lamp switches off if anyone enters the room.
